Mr. Alcorn served as Vice President, Finance for Response Genetics, Inc. (“RGI”). RGI is a venture capital-backed company founded in 1999 that licensed proprietary technology from the University of Southern California to provide cutting edge genetic testing to help target chemotherapeutic agents for patients diagnosed with cancer. Mr. Alcorn was involved in all aspects of the start-up of this company. RGI generated revenues of approximately $20.0M in 2011 and employs 80 staff. Based on this success, Response Genetics completed a public offering on the NASDAQ stock exchange in June, 2007 and now trades under the symbol RGDX. Mr. Alcorn was heavily engaged in the public offering process.
Mr. Alcorn previously served as Vice Chairman, Financial Affairs for the USC Department of Surgery, and as Executive Vice President and Treasurer of USC Surgeons Incorporated, a 501c3 corporation. Both organizations are affiliated with the USC School of Medicine. He held these positions from January, 1991 thru January 31, 2009. Mr. Alcorn was involved in all aspects of establishing USC Surgeons, Inc. which began operations in October, 1991. The organization now includes approximately 100 full-time faculty, 200 staff members and a budget of $25,000,000. Professional fee billing activity approximates $50,000,000/annum. Mr. Alcorn was responsible for all financial functions for each of these organizations.
Prior to joining USC in 1991, Mr. Alcorn spent 10 years with publicly held National Medical Enterprises (now Tenet Corporation) in a variety of corporate and hospital management positions. Initially, his work was in the area of corporate development including business planning, acquisitions, divestitures and corporate restructuring. During his last five years at NME he was a senior member of the executive team responsible for the development, construction, staffing and opening of the 275 bed, $160,000,000 USC University Hospital medical center complex built to support the USC School of Medicine.
Mr. Alcorn has been an invited speaker at numerous regional and national meetings and has lectured in the Health Administration Bachelor and Master’s programs at USC. He has been a member of the Board of a national surgical practice organization and has served as a consultant and member of the board for several start-up companies and healthcare concerns. He has published a nationally distributed newsletter that focused on academic healthcare management. He was an officer of the Board of Response Genetics, Inc., USC Surgeons, Inc. and the USC Cardiovascular and Thoracic Institute, and currently is a member of the Board of Vom Fass USA, LLC, a national franchise company that is a purveyor of fine vinegars, oils and spirits. He and his partners also opened the first Vom Fass store in California in Westlake Village in 2010.
Mr. Alcorn received a B.S. from Whittier College in 1980, and a Masters in Health Services Administration from the University of Southern California in 1982. He is also a 1985 graduate of Tenet Corporation’s Executives in Training program, a corporate curriculum designed for Tenet’s promising young managers.
